What is SEMAGLUTIDE and How Does it Work?

Semaglutide is used to treat type 2 diabetes, but has recently been approved  by the FDA to help manage weight (along with diet and exercise) in overweight adults with other risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, etc.  Semaglutide is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in patients with type 2 diabetes, vascular disease, and/or heart disease.

GLP-1 (glucgon-like peptide) is a protein hormone naturally produced in the small intestine.  It attaches to receptors on specific cells, stimulating a variety of effects in the body.  Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide that acts in the nervous system to suppress appetite and delay emptying of the stomach, resulting in decreased hunger and an earlier onset of  “feeling full” when you eat.  Semaglutide also stimulates insulin production and release to help improve carbohydrate/sugar metabolism

Semaglutide is injected once weekly at any time of day, with or without food, and should be injected on the same day each week.  The very small injection goes just under the skin and is virtually painless. Semaglutide is generally well tolerated.  The most common side effects are GI symptoms such as queasiness, nausea, and loose stools.  These symptoms usually go away after one or two days and are usually well-tolerated by most.  Symptoms may return with dose increases, but, again, they usually resolve in 1-2 days.

Any weight loss program relying on medication alone cannot be trusted to be successful.  Semaglutide does cause some weight loss alone, but it is much more effective with some gentle lifestyle changes including:

  • Simple dietary modifications insuring good protein intake and avoiding foods high in fat or with a high “glycemic index” (rapidly metabolized to sugar).
  • Limiting alcohol intake
  • Low impact exercise like walking, cycling, yoga….1/2 hour or more 3-5 times a week
  • Maintaining water intake of at least 64 ounces every day

Though disappointing, the fact of the matter is there is no “magic medication” to cause healthy, sustainable weight loss without some attention to diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes!  Think about it…., if that medication existed, wouldn’t all of us who are overweight have already used it?

The good news is we finally have a useful medication that is safe, effective and works using normal body functions without the discomfort and unhealthy results of simple “starvation” types of diets and medications
